Issues of Turkmen-American cooperation discussed during meeting in Tashkent

On the 15th of July, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with the U.S. Homeland Security Advisor Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall. The U.S. Special representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad also participated to the meeting.

The parties discussed the key aspects of Turkmen-American cooperation, in particular in the field of security. In this context, the importance of bilateral and multilateral mechanisms of collaboration aimed at preventing the present threats and challenges in the region and beyond was underlined.  

A comprehensive exchange of views took place on the situation in Afghanistan, the direct neighbor of Turkmenistan. The position of the Turkmen side to assist the advancement of the peace process in Afghanistan through political-diplomatic means was informed.  The advancement of joint projects particularly of socio-economic and humanitarian scope with the Afghan side was presented.

In this respect, the parties exchanged views on the intensification of the activities of “Turkmenistan – USA – Afghanistan” format for the attainment of concrete results.
