Representative of Italy may become new head of NATO, says La Repubblica

The representative of Italy is considered a favorite and may become the new head of NATO after Jens Stoltenberg, APA reports citing the newspaper la Repubblica.

According to an unspoken rotation, the post of Secretary-General of the alliance should be occupied by a representative of one of the states of the Mediterranean region.

According to the publication, Spain and Portugal cannot be considered competitors, since representatives of these states already hold important positions in the international political hierarchy – Spaniard Josep Borrel is the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Portuguese Antonio Guterres is the head of the UN.

At the same time, the newspaper says that the Italian government has not yet decided on its candidate, who should be approved before the NATO summit in June in Madrid.
