On the evening of July 7, 2021, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Mitsotakis congratulated on the centenary of the Communist Party of China (CPC). He expressed that the CPC has changed not only the future of China, but also the trajectory of the world’s development. China has successfully lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, which is a miracle in the history of human progress. I believe that under the leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping, China will continue to make new and extraordinary achievements.
Xi Jinping expressed his appreciation, and stressed that the CPC stands ready to work with all peace-loving countries and people to promote the shared human values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy, and freedom, and make greater contribution to world peace and human progress.
Xi Jinping pointed out that as the world is currently facing the intertwined challenges of profound changes and COVID-19 pandemic unseen in a century, China and Greece, as ancient civilizations with a history of glories and sufferings, share similar philosophies about the progress of human civilization and changes in the international order. Under the current situation, to carry forward and further promote China-Greece relations will not only facilitate post-COVID economic recovery, but also contribute wisdom of ancient civilizations to the improvement of the global governance system. The two sides should continue to understand and support each other on core interests and major concerns to set an example of friendship and mutual trust for the international community; further strengthen Belt and Road and China-CEEC cooperation, so as to create a benchmark of mutually beneficial cooperation and set an example of mutual learning among civilizations for the international community, as well as rally new consensus and strength to promote world peace and development.
Xi Jinping stressed that this year marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Greece comprehensive strategic partnership, and next year marks the 50th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties. China is willing to work with Greece to strengthen exchanges on governance experience, and deepen traditional friendship and practical cooperation to elevate China-Greece relations to a new level. China and Europe should engage in dialogue and deepen cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect, seeking common ground while shelving differences, and openness and mutual benefit. This serves the interests of both sides and conforms to the trend of the times. He hopes that Greece will continue to play a positive role to this end.
Mitsotakis expressed that Greece attaches high importance to developing relations with China, and hopes to take the opportunity of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership to expand cooperation in economy and trade, tourism, green development and other fields, promote dialogue and mutual learning among civilizations, jointly ensure the success of major projects agreed upon by both sides, and work for greater development in bilateral relations. He welcomes more Chinese enterprises to invest in Greece, and wishes the Beijing Winter Olympics success. Greece supports the European Union in developing comprehensive strategic partnership with China and strengthening dialogue and cooperation.
