Winter Olympics opening ceremony starts in Beijing

The opening ceremony of the XXIV Olympic Winter Games kicked off on Friday at the Beijing National Stadium, APA reports citing teletrader.

The 2022 event will see 2,871 athletes from 91 nations participate in 15 disciplines. Several competitions already took place earlier in the day. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to officially open the games, held under the slogan “Together for a Shared Future.

Twenty countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, did not have their official representation at the ceremony as a response to the alleged abuses of human rights in the Chinese region of Xinjiang.
