Mirziyoyev, Al Thani hold talks

On October 2, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held talks with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as part of his state visit to Doha on Monday.

According the presidential press service, the parties discussed the ways to “strengthen political dialogue, expanding trade, economic, investment cooperation and stepping up cultural and humanitarian exchanges.”

In June, the Emir of Qatar visited Uzbekistan on the first high-level visit in the history of the two countries. At the negotiations the heads of state reached an agreement to upgrade cooperation to the level of a “comprehensive partnership.” On the day of the arrival of the Emir of Qatar, Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree introducing a visa-free regime for Qatari citizens for a period of 30 days.

In May, the Qatari embassy opened in Tashkent. On the eve of Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit, the Embassy of Uzbekistan also opened in Doha.

The President of Uzbekistan and the Emir of Qatar reiterated their readiness for a “fold increase” in trade figures, implementation of joint investment projects in the fields of traditional and “green” energy, petrochemicals, advanced metal processing, agriculture, construction, tourism, finance and others.

To step up business ties, the parties proposed to organize a joint Intergovernmental Commission and Business Council and hold their first meetings, as well as a business forum of the two countries in January 2024 in Doha. They also reached an agreement to hold the Week of Culture and Tourism of Uzbekistan in Doha.

The two leaders also discussed the global and regional agenda and emphasized the importance of supporting the advancement of the Trans-Afghan Railway railway project.

The parties agreed that it is important to continue providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people to ensure peace and stability in this country.

A number of documents were signed at the Summit in various areas of cooperation were signed. Among them are the Agreement between Governments on Cooperation in Tourism and Business Events and the Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Business Council between Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Memorandums of understanding and cooperation were also signed between the Uzbekistan Fund for Reconstruction and Development and the Qatar Investment Agency on investment cooperation, between the Anti-Corruption Agency of Uzbekistan and the Office of Administrative Control and Transparency of Qatar, between the National Social Protection Agency under the President of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Social Development and Family Qatar, between the Ministries of Internal Affairs, between the National Center for Human Rights of Uzbekistan and the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar, as well as between the Committee for Religious Affairs of Uzbekistan and the Doha International Center for Interreligious Dialogue.
