The Kazakh authorities will deploy 500 military personnel and rescuers to the West Kazakhstan region to combat floods.
“On the morning of April 21, an excess of the critical water level of 8.5 m was recorded in the Zhaiyk River (Ural). As a result, houses located in the river’s floodplain were flooded. Water also reached the microdistricts of the city near the Zhaiyk and Shagan rivers,” the press service of the Kazakhstani government said.
Flood control measures in Uralsk are being carried out in an intensified mode, and protective structures are being fortified. Since the beginning of the floodings, more than 136 km of dams have been built in the region, including 45 km in Uralsk along the Zhaiyk and Shagan rivers.
“Vice Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev ordered the transfer of another 500 military personnel and rescuers from the Mangistau and Aktobe regions, Astana and Almaty to the West Kazakhstan region to combat the peak of the flood. 200 people from the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Ministry of Defense have already arrived in Uralsk and started work,” said the press service.
