The UN General Assembly unanimously approved the resolution «On strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)».

The proposal to adopt this resolution was put forward by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in 2020.

The resolution emphasizes the important role of parliaments in recommitting to unity, solidarity and multilateral cooperation to support a comprehensive, sustainable and coherent post-COVID-19 recovery, ensuring that no one should be left behind.

The General Assembly calls on states to support parliaments, engage them in future activities to achieve the SDGs and follow-up processes, especially in the preparation of voluntary national reports, as well as ensure and strengthen national ownership and accountability.

A particular attention is paid to gender equality, which should be the focus of efforts to accelerate progress toward the SDGs by promoting full, equal and meaningful participation of women in legislative bodies and parliamentary processes.

The important role and valuable contribution of the youth in the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda is recognized, and the urgency of ensuring full, equal and meaningful participation of the youth in parliamentary processes is acknowledged.

The document was co-authored by 80 countries from all continents around the world, including Central Asian countries, Austria, Algeria, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belgium, Germany, Egypt, Spain, Indonesia, Italy, Qatar, PRC, Colombia, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Finland, France, Sweden, Japan and others.

The resolution was warmly welcomed by the UN agencies and other international organizations. It is emphasized that the resolution will be a unique guide for parliamentarians, mobilizing their efforts in accelerating the implementation of the SDGs.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union considers this document an important step in preparing for the SDG Summit to be held in September 2023 as part of the High-Level Week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
