Kazakhstan to observe national mourning after deadly arms depot blast

At least 13 killed when multiple explosions hit southern Zhambyl province along border with Kyrgyzstan on Thursday evening.

NUR SULTAN, Kazakhstan (AA) – Kazakhstan will observe a day of national mourning on Sunday to honor 13 people who were killed in multiple explosions in an arms depot, the nation’s president said on Saturday.

“Due to the tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of people, I declare Aug. 29 a national day of mourning,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

The blast took place on Thursday evening in the Bayzak district of the southern Zhambyl province that borders Kyrgyzstan.

The death toll from multiple explosions heard at the site at around 7.00 p.m. local time (1300GMT) has risen to 13, according to official sources.
