Finance ministers and central bank governors of the Group of Seven (G7) and Group of Twenty (G20) countries will hold separate meetings in Washington on April 17-18, Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said at a press conference in Tokyo.
“We will meet with our friends from the G7 in Washington on April 17,” he said. “Our meeting will be held in parallel with the meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bankers, which will be held there on April 17 and 18.”
The minister noted that he intends to raise the issue of a sharp drop in the yen against the dollar at these meetings. The day before it dropped to its lowest level in 34 years. “We are monitoring this process and will take appropriate measures if necessary,” the minister said, hinting at the possibility of intervention in the foreign exchange market.
The meetings of finance ministers and heads of central banks of the G7 and G20 will be timed to coincide with the spring session of the governing bodies of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington.
