US Senator Advocates Lifting Cold War Trade Restrictions on Kazakhstan

US Senator Marco Rubio has proposed lifting Cold War-era trade restrictions on Kazakhstan. He noted that these restrictions, based on the Jackson-Vanik amendment, run counter to Kazakhstan’s economic reforms and efforts to meet free market conditions. Rubio emphasized that lifting the restrictions would strengthen not only Kazakhstan’s, but also the United States’ trade ties with Central Asia and increase strategic cooperation. This step aims to increase US economic and diplomatic influence in the region.
