Berdimuhamedov greets Russian counterpart on 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov arrived in Moscow on Friday for his first foreign visit since taking office and met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Speaking at a meeting with Putin, Berdimuhamedov congratulated his counterpart on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties as well as the 20th anniversary of the signing of the 2002 Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation.

“I would also like to note that Turkmenistan and the Russian Federation have a high level of political, diplomatic, trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation based on strategic partnership,” he said.

Berdimuhamedov emphasized the importance of Turkmenistan’s cooperation with Russia and invited Putin to pay an official visit to his country.

Putin, for his part, stated that the Russia-Turkmenistan cooperation has reached a “strategic level,” and that the two leaders plan to sign an important document regarding the future development of bilateral ties.

“A lot of work is being done as part of your visit. Yesterday, I know, ministers and deputy prime ministers met, so, as usually happens when a high-level visit takes place, at the highest level, all colleagues gather, work actively, and I am sure that in addition to the declaration we are signing today, this whole complex of joint work will, of course, benefit development of our relationship,” the Russian president said.

Berdimuhamedov was elected Turkmenistan’s president in March 2022. He succeeded his father, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who had ruled the country for 16 years.
