The parliamentary groups are set to meet today in view of negotiations on putting forth a proposal for the country’s new president in Albania.

The leader of the Republican Party, also chairman of the Alliance for Change parlamentary group, Fatmir Mediu, told reporters that the opposition should come up with a joint candidate for President. He added that that negotiations are not exclusive, but based on criteria and constitution. “We cannot thank about boycotting the process. We have to work on introducing a proposal from the opposition,” he said.

Mediu also informed that he has discussed this matter with the representatives of DP’s Re establishment Commission, Oerd Bylykbashi and Luciano Boçi, as well as with DP’s parliamentary group chair Enkelejd Alibeaj.

The first three rounds for the election of the president require 84 votes, while the ruling majority can singlehandedly choose a president during the 4th and 5th rounds, with a minimum of 71 votes. Rounds must take place within 7 days, so the entire procedure of electing the new president is expected to wrap up within May.
