The United States has accused Russia of using Ukraine’s biggest nuclear power plant as a “nuclear shield” by stationing troops there, preventing Ukrainian forces from returning fire and risking a terrible nuclear accident.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that it is “too soon” to celebrate the first shipment of grain which left the Black Sea port of Odesa on Monday and is expected to stop for inspections in Istanbul before heading to Tripoli in Lebanon.

The US has announced a new tranche of military aid for Ukraine’s forces worth $550m, including ammunition for much-needed rocket launchers and artillery guns.

Several explosions were heard overnight in the southern city of Mykolaiv, its mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych said on social media.
