South Korean MFA calls US Secretary of State

Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong had a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on the morning of August 6 and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, including the ROK-U.S. Alliance and Korean Peninsula issues.

Foreign Minister Chung and Secretary Blinken shared the view that the ROK-U.S. Summit in May has helped the ROK-U.S. Alliance evolve into a strong, comprehensive, and mutually-beneficial alliance, and appreciated ongoing close high-level exchanges and consultations between the two countries to fully implement the follow-up measures.

Foreign Minister Chung and Secretary Blinken committed to continuing coordinated efforts between the two countries to make substantial progress in achieving complete denuclearization and establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Both sides had an in-depth discussion on ways to cooperate with the DPRK in such areas as humanitarian cooperation and agreed to make continued efforts to engage with the DPRK.

Foreign Minister Chung and Secretary Blinken noted with appreciation the close communication carried out between the two countries on various occasions including Secretary Blinken’s visit to Seoul in March, the ROK-U.S. Summit in May, and the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, and agreed to continue strategic communication to further advance the Alliance and make progress on Korean Peninsula issues.
