President of Mongolia Ukhnaa Khurelsukh delivered a statement on 1 November at the General Debate of the COP26 World Leaders Summit, held in Glasgow, the United Kingdom.
In his statement, he noted that Mongolia fully supports the efforts of the international community to reduce and increase absorption of greenhouse gas emissions, and reaffirmed its commitments to the Paris Agreement, and to mobilize every possible resource to fulfill them.
He announced that Mongolia raised its target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the main cause of climate change, to 22.7 percent by 2030, through updating its Nationally Determined Contributions, and noted that through introducing advanced technology and innovation and increasing necessary funding, there is an opportunity to increase the commitment to 27.2 percent.
Furthermore, the President announced that as a national contribution to the international community efforts to combat climate change, increase the absorption of greenhouse gases, reduce poverty or combat desertification through economic means, protect the health of children and women who are the most vulnerable to climate change, and improve the overall quality of life, Mongolia has launched a national campaign to plant billions of trees by 2030 and decided to spend at least 1 percent of its GDP annually to mitigate adverse effects of climate change and desertification.
President U.Khurelsukh underlined that common understanding, collaboration, resolve and perseverance are of utmost importance in achieving the mission to fight climate change, and have a responsible approach to nature and leave a greener world for the descendants, and called the nations of the world to combine their efforts for this deed.
