Demonstrators in Tbilisi block main street of city to traffic.

Thousands of people took to the streets in various cities of Georgia on Monday to support the country’s bid for membership in the European Union.

People who participated in a demonstration in the evening organized by non-governmental organizations in the capital Tbilisi blocked the main street of the city, Shota Rustaveli Avenue, to traffic.

Leaders of various opposition parties and university students were among the demonstrators, who carried the flags of the EU, Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova.

The participants, chanting the slogan “Towards Europe,” marched from the Tbilisi Concert Hall to the Georgian parliament.

Speaking during the demonstrations, the rally organizers accused the government of not making enough efforts for Georgia’s EU membership and asserted that the Tbilisi administration should be more active in this regard.

On Friday at a press conference held in Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the commission’s opinion on the candidate status for Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.

For Georgia, the commission recommended that the country be given the perspective to become a member of the European Union.

“It should be granted candidate status once a number of priorities have been addressed,” the statement said.

Based on the commission’s recommendation, it is up to member states to decide unanimously whether to start the accession process.

Inspired by Ukraine’s request, Georgia and Moldova also presented their EU membership applications on March 3.

EU leaders will discuss the candidate status at their summit on June 23-24.
