JAKARTA, INDONESIA – OCTOBER 04: Indonesian farmers and environmental activists held a protest on Monday (Oct.4) in front of the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta.
“Time to stop funding climate chaos” and “Japan wows to stop funding coal” were some of the banners they carried.
Protesters also submitted a petition refusing Japanese funding for the construction of a coal-fired power plant in Indramayu district of West Java province.
They emphasized that Japan is currently falling behind other Asian countries including South Korea and China, which have committed to no longer financing coal-fired power plants.
Many banks in Japan have already stopped funding new coal-fired power plants and the government of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has vowed to reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
