Fumio Kishida takes office as Japan’s new prime minister

TOKYO, JAPAN (ARCHIVE): Fumio Kishida, the leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected prime minister in an extraordinary session of the House of Representatives on Monday.

He won 311 votes in the 465-seat lower house.

Kishida, the country’s 100th prime minister, will hold his post until ordinary general elections scheduled for Oct. 31.
